vol. 9 Yamada Ayaka|山田彩加
2022, lithograph on paper, 70 × 52 cm (image), edition of 30, price: ¥117,700
Yamada Ayaka, who has been actively engaged in creative endeavors based on the clear concept of “connections of life,” often reveals in her masterpieces such as Prayer to All Creation: The Origin of Life an aspect of nature that could be described as a beautiful yet dynamic vital chaos, with even the shadow of death lurking here and there. This is a subtle yet powerful wriggling and trembling that, while appearing to be still, repeatedly transforms and fuses, and I have previously pointed out that it evokes the “living” nature of the Ionian natural philosopher Anaximander, the limitless and indefinite primordial substance apeiron.

Anaximander is considered to be one of the pre-Socratic thinkers, and Martin Heidegger is said to have advocated the restoration of the concept of “living” nature (physis) as “being = becoming” that they cultivated. On the other hand, philosophers from Plato to Hegel established the concept of nature as “being = produced” and are said to have reduced nature to inorganic matter – material (matter) to be used for creation.

Yamada Ayaka’s dance of delicate lines may revive memories of “living” nature that generates itself, that is, the true nature of life, in our eyes, which have been imprinted with such a “dead” view of nature.
